The Resurrection by Mike Duran

resurrection

When the dead come back to life, someone must pay the price.

About the book:

When Ruby Case raises a boy from the dead, she creates an uproar in the quiet coastal town of Stonetree. Some brand her a witch; others, a godsend. But the controversy is just the beginning. For this resurrection has awakened more than just a dead boy.

Reverend Ian Clark does not believe in miracles. Haunted by demons, both past and present, he is resigning from the ministry and has no interest in the city’s spiritual climate, much less its urban legends. But he is about to get a wake-up call…

Together, Ruby and Reverend Clark are thrust into a search for answers…and a collision with unspeakable darkness. For the forces unleashed by Ruby threaten to destroy them all. In the coming battle this unlikely duo is the town’s only hope. But can they overcome their own brokenness in time to stop the evil, or will they be its next victim?

My review:

Honestly, I really had no idea what to expect from this novel. I’ve read a couple of Mike Duran’s stories before, but this was his debut novel, so I wasn’t sure what it would be like.

Well, now I can honestly say it was awesome! It was rife with tension, keeping me turning pages into the wee hours. The characters were thoroughly crafted, with just enough backstory to fill them with a wealth of doubts and passions to drive the story ever more intensely. The setting was well-drawn, yet still common enough to be your own neighborhood, making the agitating force behind everything even creepier. And the censure of lukewarm churches, of lukewarm faith, exposes the roots of evil, while calling Christians to excavate their own hearts and dig out the seeds of doubt and worldliness that lead to lukewarm living.

Do yourself a favor and pick up your own copy of The Resurrection. It will both convict and entertain, and it will be worth every moment of reading! 🙂

The Bones Will Speak by Carrie Stuart Parks

1570788634

About the book:

A killer with a penchant for torture has taken notice of forensic expert Gwen Marcey. . .and her daughter.

When Gwen Marcey’s dog comes home with a human skull and then leads her to a cabin in the woods near her Montana home, she realizes there’s a serial killer in her community. And when she finds a tortured young girl clinging to life on the cabin floor, she knows this killer is a lunatic.

Yet what unsettles Gwen the most is that the victim looks uncannily like her daughter.

The search for the torturer leads back in time to a neo-Nazi bombing in Washington state–a bombing with only one connection to Montana: Gwen. The group has a race-not-grace model of salvation. . .and they’ve marked Gwen as a race traitor.

When it becomes clear that the killer has a score to settle, Gwen finds herself in a battle against time. She will have to use all of her forensic skills to find the killer before he can carry out his threat to destroy her–and the only family she has left.

My review:

I actually bought this book for my mom for her birthday a year or two ago, and it managed to resurface from the vortex of books in her bedroom when I was helping her a few weeks back. It sounded like a decent read, so decided to show it to my book club to see if they’d be interested. They agreed right away, so I figured I’d better read it.

Well, once I started reading this book, I could not stop. I finished it in less than a day, despite having to put it down and do real life once in a while. That is vastly quicker than I normally read a book, but the plot was so interesting and the writing so smooth that I wanted to keep going. Every spare moment, I snatched it up and dove back into Gwen’s harrowing tale.

The author certainly knows how to build tension, throw false leads, and keep you guessing to the last moment. I really enjoyed her writing style and will most certainly read Carrie Stuart Parks again.

This is the second novel in the Gwen Marcey series, and I have not yet read the first, but that certainly didn’t hamper my enjoyment of this story. I highly recommend you grab your own copy and hang on for a thrilling read! 🙂

Invitation by Bill Myers, Frank Peretti, Angela Hunt, & Alton Gansky

invitation

From the book: “Four strangers with gifts they don’t understand. A world falling into darkness. This is Harbingers.

“You’re invited on a journey of suspense and the supernatural as four of your favorite bestselling authors team up for a unique series.

“From the minds of Bill Myers, Frank Peretti, Angela Hunt, and Alton Gansky, Invitation compiles the first four episodes of HARBINGERS, each following a different character.

  • Brenda — the street hustling tattoo artist who sees images of the future
  • The Professor — the atheist ex-priest ruled by logic
  • Andi — the professor’s brilliant but geeky assistant who sees inexplicable patterns
  • Tank — the naĂŻve, big-hearted jock with a surprising connection to healing power

“Brought together for the first time in “The Call,” the four soon realize pockets of darkness are emerging throughout the world. Whether it involves a mysterious house, the unexplainable death of animals around the world, or an otherworldly little girl, each puzzle they solve brings them closer to the ultimate explanation of what’s happening. But will they discover the truth in time?”

The idea of this series of collected novellas is wonderful: as they explain in the introduction, this group of author friends wanted to write engaging stories that could be read in one to two sittings. They see it as a kind of game for authors. Each author writes from the perspective of one of the four main characters, and each story builds off of the one before it. The stories are all unique, but work so well together.

They’re creepy and they’re kooky, mysterious and spooky, but altogether pretty darn cool, and I’d seriously recommend you pick up a copy of Invitation, HARBINGERS Cycle #1, as soon as possible. Happy reading!

Many thanks to Bethany House for the copy of this novel. I was not required to give a positive review. All opinions are my very own! 🙂

Conspiracy of Silence by Ronie Kendig

9780764217654

From the book: “Four years after a tragic mission decimated his team, Cole “Tox” Russell has been disavowed by the United States. And that’s fine — he just wants to be left alone. But when a dormant, centuries-old disease is unleashed, Tox is lured back into action.

“Tox and his former Special Forces team regroup to work with FBI deception expert, Kasey Cortes, and fiery archaeologist, Tzivia Khalon, to search the globe for answers — and a cure. As the mission leads from one continent to another, it becomes clear they’re not just fighting a plague but battling an ancient secret society whose true goals remain hidden.

“With time running out and the threat of a global pandemic rising, Tox and his team realize their sole chance might be to reach back through centuries of silence to find the only answer that can save them all.”

If you like reading Clive Cussler or Don Brown, you’ll certainly enjoy digging into Ronie Kendig’s latest thriller, Conspiracy of Silence, book 1 of “The Tox Files.” Tox and his team are well-crafted, battling against both the forces of evil and their own complicated pasts, presents, and futures. The action is absolutely non-stop, and the biblical history is deftly woven into excitement of the storyline.

I could not put this one down! I thoroughly enjoyed the story and truly appreciated the honor and respect Ms. Kendig showed for the men (and women) of our Special Forces, reminding us of all that they sacrifice for the country they love.

Pick this one up… you’ll find your heart racing right along with Tox and his team, as they dodge flaming arrows and deadly toxins. *Note: there is a free, e-book prequel to this novel, The Warrior’s Seal, available on Amazon. The story does refer back to things that happened in the prequel, so you might consider starting with it!

Many thanks to Bethany House for allowing me to review this novel. I was not required to give a positive review. All opinions are my very own! 🙂

Here’s hoping you were blessed with a heart-warming, joy-filled Christmas and praying that your New Year is overflowing with smiles, laughter, good books, and peace in Christ. God bless you all! 🙂

Rebirth by Amy Brock McNew

9781943788040-Perfect.indd

From the publisher: “Liz Brantley has a gift she wants to return. Able to see and fight demonic forces, she has spent her life alone, battling the minions of hell bent on her destruction, running from the God who gave her this curse. Drawn to her abilities, the demon Markus unleashes havoc on her hometown and pulls Liz further into the throes of battle. She’s desperate for a normal life. When she meets a mysterious man who seems unaware of the mystical realm that haunts her, the life she’s always wanted moves within reach. But her slice of normal slips from her grasp when an old flame, Ryland Vaughn, reappears with secrets of his own. Secrets that will alter her destiny. Torn between two worlds, Liz is caught in an ancient war between good and evil. And she isn’t sure which side to choose.”

Oooh, this is a good one! Rebirth is a fascinating picture of what spiritual warfare might look like in the physical realm. Liz and Ryland are captivating characters: both are complicated by their pasts, needing to let go of who they were and what they’ve done and let God use them as He will. Sometimes I wanted to smack Liz and ask her why she insisted on being so stubborn, but the more you read, the more you get to know her and understand her motivations – beautiful character building!

My favorite line? “No one else can fulfill your calling.” Kind of sums it up for me – no matter your situation (whether you are fighting off demons with a katana or flipping burgers in a fast-food joint), you have a purpose, and God will use you for His glory, if you let Him.

This book was an excellent read: moments of heart-pounding excitement, blended with flashes of heart-rending realism, mixed with a dash hopeful expectancy, Rebirth is one I’d highly recommend. Even better, the ebook version is currently on sale for only $1.99 through Amazon! Click here to check it out…

*Special thanks to the amazing Louise Shiles-Burcham for letting me borrow this book before she even got a chance to read it herself! God is using you for His glory every day!!

The Patmos Deception by Davis Bunn

a131ad06c26322b933db1d6aa47eb36d

Carey Mathers, newly minted forensic archaeologist, lands in Athens to find that her new job isn’t quite what she expected. Nick Hennessy, roving reporter, is looking for his next big story, and the rash of antiquities thefts in Greece might be just what he needs to get his career on track. Dimitri Rubinos, tour boat operator, is struggling to keep his business going and support his ailing father. When all three are thrown together, will they be able to put aside personal distractions and solve the mystery of the thefts or will personalities and circumstances hold them back from discovering the truth behind The Patmos Deception?

How can you beat a Davis Bunn novel? Packed with excitement and suspense, a bit of romance, and characters who grow in grace and knowledge throughout the story, The Patmos Deception, is another fabulous adventure. He does an amazing job of sucking his reader into the world of his story – the setting is so intricately, yet sleekly, described that I feel as if I’ve been to Greece and its Dodecanese Islands (if only)! Bunn never disappoints; his novels are a great distraction from the mundane, a trip to a more fantastic and exciting life than most of us experience! I’d certainly recommend The Patmos Deception. And here’s hoping we see Carey, Nick, and Dimitri again soon…
