Praying with Jane by Rachel Dodge

About the book:

The charm of Jane Austen and her novels has been enjoyed for over 200 years by readers around the world. Much has been written about her fascinating life, yet little is known about Jane’s spiritual side. In this lovely 31-day devotional, you will get an in-depth look at Miss Austen’s vibrant, steadfast prayer and faith life. Her intimate relationship with the Father comes to life through her exquisite prayers, touching biographical anecdotes, intimate excerpts from family letters and memoirs, and illuminating scenes from her novels.

Spiritual insights and Scripture references shed light on the profound meaning behind Miss Austen’s prayers and the enduring truths they contain. Each day ends with a key Bible verse and invitation to “pray with Jane,” helping to ignite and deepen your own vibrant relationship with the Father.

My review:

I have always been a Jane Austen fan, so when I saw a new devotional based on her prayers, I had to check it out. And I found it to most certainly be both a beautiful devotional and a lovely examination of the faith of Jane Austen.

While there are only three prayers written by Jane Austen in this devotional, Rachel Dodge has broken each prayer down into bite-sized pieces, that the reader might savor them and learn from them. She takes each piece of each prayer and expands upon it, parsing the prayers, then showing how they are reflected in Austen’s works, and finally demonstrating how they can be put to effective use in our lives today.

Praying with Jane: 31 Days through the Prayers of Jane Austen is more than a must read – it’s a devotional to be treasured by any Austen fan and anyone who desires to draw closer to the Lord through prayer. I have been blessed by this devotional and have no doubt that you will be, too.

Many thanks to Bethany House and NetGalley for the advanced digital copy of this devotional for review purposes. I was not required to give a positive review. All opinions are my very own! 🙂

A Jane Austen Devotional by Steffany Woolsey

Are you, like me, a big time Jane Austen fan? Have you read all of her novels? Have you seen all of the movies and miniseries that have been based on those novels? Have you read any of her six novels or seen any of the multitudes of productions based on them? Last question, did you enjoy what you read or saw? If you answered yes to any or all of these questions, I have discovered the most wonderful tool to help you both grow closer with God and His Word and also gain a deeper understanding of the nuances of Austen’s work. Steffany Woolsey – an obviously brilliant woman 🙂 – compiled and wrote The Jane Austen Devotional. This devotional seamlessly pairs a selection from one of Austen’s novels with a beautifully written devotional thought and Bible verse which highlight the meaning of both the selection and the Biblical lesson.

With topics like, “Vanity’s Folly,” “Honoring Your Parents,” “Idle Gossip,” and “Forgiven Much, Forgiving Much,” Woolsey brings to life Austen’s words, illuminating the moral fibers with which they are so tightly woven. The Jane Austen Devotional is a perfect gift – for any young woman, for  yourself, or for any Jane Austen fan on your gift list.

Jesus Calling Devotional Bible, NKJV by Sarah Young

I must begin by saying that the subtitle to this devotional Bible is completely accurate: “Enjoying Peace in His Presence.” As I read through Sarah Young’s (Gen. Ed.) devotions, interspersed throughout this NKJV translation of the Holy Scriptures, I felt myself relaxing into His Word. I’ll admit, it was a bit strange at first trying to get used to reading these messages which are written from Christ’s perspective. But, paired with the prayers (or diary entries as I thought of them – so poignant and so very relevant; like someone wrote down my thoughts while I wasn’t looking) and God’s Word, these readings made it feel like I was just sitting down and having a conversation with Him. Reading some of my favorite passages, I found His Word coming to life for me in a new way as I read the devotional messages alongside them. One of my favorite pieces of this devotional Bible is the section entitled, “When Your Heart Longs for Help” – a topical index which leads you to devotions tailored to what you are feeling/facing and Biblical passages to help strengthen you and give you His peace. The “Jesus Calling Devotional Bible” is a blessing and an excellent tool for anyone desiring a closer relationship with the Lord.
